XChina — Linux Software Portal
Originally at xchina.clinux.org
XChina was a Chinese-language Linux software directory and download portal in the mid-2000s. It catalogued Linux applications, distribution releases, and developer tools with Chinese-language descriptions and installation notes.
What it was
XChina occupied the same niche as English-language sites like Freshmeat or LinuxApp.org — a curated catalogue of Linux software with version info, install instructions, and short descriptions. The Chinese-language packaging made it useful to readers who didn't have easy access to English-language software directories at the time.
Where this ecosystem moved
Distribution package managers (apt, yum, then dnf, plus the Flatpak / Snap / AppImage layer) absorbed most of the discovery role that catalogue sites used to play. Specialised application directories live on now mostly as project-specific awesome-lists on GitHub and as distribution-specific software stores.
